Abbas Hashemi

Abbas makes outdoor sculpture for private and public gardens in limestone, and smaller indoor pieces in alabaster, soapstone or marble. He aims to achieve simplicity in his work, although the ideas expressed may be complex. His work tends towards the abstract and is inspired by organic forms, books and poems, or personal memories. In his more figurative work, the importance lies in associations rather than literal representation.

Born in 1941 in Iran, Abbas came to England in 1971 and studied graphic design at Cambridge College of Art & Technology. From 1975 to 1982 he worked as a graphic designer, photographer and illustrator. From 1982 he created computer graphics for national and international clients. His animated graphics were shown in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Since 1995 his lifelong interest in sculpture has become a full-time occupation. Recently he has been working on letter sculptures in 3D. Abbas exhibits two or three times a year, usually in Cambridge or Brighton and occasionally in London.
