Oliver Hein is a German artist touring studios in the UK and Ireland with his family for one year, starting at Wysing in 2007.
Hein's kinetic sculptures and installations focus on spaces and objects in transformation and their manifestations through movement or time. The varying appearance of a space through: subtle changes in light; objects slowly growing by the influx of air and turning into 'inner' spaces; or sudden mechanical movements of machines drawing lines on floors and ceilings all form part of his work. Everything is dependant on the position of the viewer in relation to the work, which playfully deceives the eye creating moments of poetic mystery.
Hein's sculptures and installations intervene in the built environment and put a different complexion on familiar urban surroundings. Currently he is working on a series of installations related to English architecture: The Suitcase Sculptures, inflatable large scale installations and vacuum wrappings made of Polyethylene sheet and air, confront the venerable architecture of Cambridge with shapes of this common material, that has entirely penetrated modern life.
Oliver was born 1956 in Munich, studied Art History and Sculpture at the Art Academy in Munich, Germany. He has exhibited internationally and carried out prize winning Art Art in the public realm commissions, as well as crossover performance projects in sculpture, music and painting.
