Nicholas James Juett

For a painting to be exciting, the painter has to paint what is interesting or relevant to them at any one time. When I was in America I managed to make the inanimate animate, and the colour and composition of my works was a key feature. While this has remained true throughout my career my choice of subject has changed according to where I was living and to reflect my situation and state of mind.

Nicholas James Juett is an artist who was born in Cambridge and spent much of his earlier career in the United States. He has been working on a series of paintings of street facades around his home city which use his trademark vibrant colours to transform our perception of some familiar locations. Importantly, depicting the town as the locals see it rather than just focus on the most famous tourist attractions here.

The title of each painting is the postcode of the street depicted, so that every painting in the series may be topographically situated on a map or on the Internet. Having recently been inspired by Google Earth on the internet (which allows viewers to swoop, bird-like over towns or even whole expanses of the globe) his studio has produced a number of paintings. From this perspective, the viewer sees distant countries, cloud formations, the curvature of the earth, Cambridge landmarks like Jesus Green pool.

His art has had recognition from various international institutions, while remaining outside of any commercial gallery representing him, instead focusing upon public access and non-for-profit venues. His exhibition credits include the cities of New York, Chicago and Los Angeles; and in Europe, Zagreb, Cakovec, Rijeka, Cambridge and London.
