Andrew Tanser trained initially as an architectural stone and wood carver, starting at 16 in 1981. He went on to study as an industrial designer and work in London. Since 1993 Andrew has been producing his own work, undertaken a wide variety of commissions, and Public Art projects.
Shape is Andrew's thing, and after establishing the balance, movement and rhythm in the underlying forms and ideas, he then moves on to technical, materialsand surface details: lines, pattern or texture. His aim is to breath life into static inanimate materials, and make a meaningful, believable, convincing self-contained object that has a credibility, elegance, integrity and quality of its own.
Andrew's most successful work is a culmination of a number of ideas, observations and feelings expressed simply and directly. He tends to work within a set of aesthetic principles that are more instinctive than defined, hinting at the natural world as its origins. Using clean, full, voluptuous, feminine, rounded forms, with a good sense of structure and purpose.
Andrew extensive professional expertise, skills and experience, and enjoys the variety and challenges that projects bring. From working as part of a team on Public Art projects to sourcing specialist suppliers and fabricators to refining designs to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.
