Katherine Hymers

Katherine' work is concerned with the body as a site for exploring issues of looking and being looked at, and therefore questioning the way we define and visually represent the body, and ourselves.

Throughout her work, Katherine utilizes her own body to create images of vulnerability, that often resonate a disconcerting intimacy, inviting proximity from a "viewer". In her performance, as well as her video work, the images Katherine creates are composed and framed, with the simplicity lending the work the quality of a still image.

The passing of time is a leitmotif underscoring much of Katherine's work and her bodily presence, and its shift between object and subject, constantly changes the dynamic of the work, allowing a temporary exchange between artist and viewer, whilst simultaneously challenging the audience to assess their position and complicity in the work.

Since graduating from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2004, Katherine has continued to develop work across video, photography and performance. Katherine was selected for a bursary scheme in 2005 with the Babylon Gallery, Cambridgeshire, which culminated in her first solo show, Embodied Existence.

Katherine was a participant of the Franko B Mentoring Scheme in 2005/06.

Katherine has also participated in group exhibitions, including Suffolk Showcase, Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery; Kettle's Yard Open, East End Collaborations Platform and Artsadmin Summer Season.
